Intensity 2 earthquake shakes Leyte

Tacloban City (September 26) -- The Operation Center of the Office of Civil Defense in Region 8 informed that an earthquake of intensity 2 shook Southern Leyte and Leyte provinces at 3:43 in the afternoon of September 25.

The location of the earthquake is traced at 10.33 North, 125.0 East, 26 kilometers North and 53 kilometers East of Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

The depth of Focus is placed at 043 shallow while the origin is said to be Tectonic and the magnitude is placed at 2.2.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity II in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte and at lower intensity in Tacloban City.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council Operations Center informed that no damages and aftershocks have been reported.

Meanwhile, on September 24, 2007, at 10:05 in the evening, an earthquake was recorded at 12.36 degrees North, 125 degrees East 85 kilometers North 7 degrees East of Borongan City, Eastern Samar. The depth of focus was placed at 022 shallow and the possible source is the Philippine Trench with tectonic origin. The magnitude is placed at 3.6 and it was felt at intensity II in Tacloban City.

At 8:20 in the evening of September 23, an earthquake was felt at Catarman, Northern Samar at intensity III. The earthquake with magnitude of 3.4 and with tectonic origin was located at 12.2 degrees North, 124.68 degrees East; 23 kilometers North 25 degrees East of Calbayog City.

Again on September 22, at 1:57 in the afternoon, an intensity II earthquake was felt in Borongan City, Eastern Samar. It was recorded at 12.42 degrees North, 125.55 degrees East, 91 kilometers North 8 degrees East o f Borongan City, Eastern Samar. It was reported to be of tectonic origin with a 019 shallow depth of focus and a magnitude of 4.1.

It was observed that in the month of September, PHILVOLCS has recorded 16 earthquakes in the different areas of the Philippines covering the period of September 4 to September 24. The earthquake on September 25 is the 17th. (PIA 8) [top]
