Biliran ceramics producers get boost from DOLE

By Marivic Alcober

Tacloban City (27 September) -- Residents in Biliran were inspired when the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Region 8 through its Regional Director Forter G. Puguon released the final tranche of the PP112,415.00 livelihood grant to Brgy. Anislagan Ceramics Producers Association for its ceramic production project.

This was bared by DOLE Information Officer Designate Virgilio A. Doroja, Jr. According to Doroja, aside from the financial assistance, a kneader equipment and some tools were also given to the association in a simple ceremony conducted in Brgy. Anislagan, Naval, Biliran wherein DOLE Biliran Field Office Head Ma. Teresa Cayanong represented Dir. Puguon in the handing over of the check to the association's President Mrs. Conrada Solite.

It was reported that during the turn-over ceremony, which was witnessed by representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology, and members of the association, Cayanong bared that 25 members and dependents of the association will benefit from the livelihood assistance extended to them by DOLE.

According to Cayanong, DOLE goes out of its way in promoting self-employment through livelihood to augment their income, most especially so that employment opportunities in the rural areas are very rare.

On the other hand, in her acceptance speech, Solite expressed her heartfelt gratitude to DOLE and other government entities responsible in extending technical and financial assistance to their association. Likewise, she challenged its members to prove that they are worth the financial assistance and encouraged them to help realize their goal of increasing income through better market access and increase volume of production.

The technical assistance released by DOLE to the association came from the funds of the Promotion of Rural Employment through Self-Employment and Entrepreneurship Development Program. Said Program is currently enrolled in the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Programs of the government.

Further it was learned that the Brgy. Anislagan Ceramics Producers Association has been accredited by DOLE for them to be capable and experienced in implementing a livelihood program of the department particularly on ceramics production considering that the quality of clay in the area has been found to be suitable for construction materials such as bricks and tiles, and decorative products.
