Anihan Festival opens
Iloilo City (27 September) -- The annual Anihan Festival of Dueñas, Iloilo kicked-off yesterday with a grand parade and street dancing.
The pomposity of the town's annual festival which serves as a tourist gatherer, is also a part of the patronal fiesta of Duenas held every September 30.
Mayor Robert Martin Pama formally declared the event open in the program that followed and graced by Department of Tourism 6 Director Edwin Trompeta, Iloilo's 4th District Board Member Shalene Hidalgo and other local officials.
A highlight of the opening rite was the Tribe competition where performing groups depicted the customs, practices and traditions of the Dueñasanons before and after the harvest. This year, the competition was participated in by 7 groups that included Tribu Arupiray of Dueñas Central Elementary School, Tribu Tumpi of Cabudian National High School, Tribu Manuglinas of Maribuyong National High School, Tribu Panurong-surong of Malusgod National High School, Tribu Hayahay of Saint Jerome Academy, Tribu Manugpanggas of the local government unit and Tribu Mangarani of Duenas General Comprehensive High School.
During the program, Fiesta Queen Rozella Lanceta, a balikbayan from Kentucky, USA and her consort Patrick John Lamasan were presented together with the muses of the 7 competing tribes.
Other features of the festival include the Agro-Industrial Fair and Garden Show, the LGU Day on September 28, Benefit Dance on September 29 and the Concelebrated Mass and Coronation Night of the Fiesta Queen on September 30.
During the LGU Day, a fun run/marathon will be held and a Laro ng Lahi where various indigenous games famous in the town will be played.
This year's festival theme is "Pagbinuligay sang tanan nga Dueñasanon, Kahamungayaan Paga-ANIHON" which aims to show the binding of Dueñasanon for a bountiful harvest. (PIA) [top]
