DSWD Caraga holds PYA gab

BUTUAN CITY (September 27) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga Region held the yearly regional convention of the Pag-asa Youth Association (PYA) recently in one of the local convention centers here, participated by Youth Development Workers and PYA officers from different local government units in Caraga.
DSWD Technical Assistance Division Chief Angelita Amista said the field office finds the convention relevant to the effective implementation of the Unlad Kabataan Program in the local level. She said, the participants to this convention reviewed and assessed the extent of progress achieved by the local government units in the implementation of the Unlad Kabataan program for year 2006; identified problem areas/concerns relative to youth development implementation; review the PYA Constitution and By-laws; elected regional PYA officers and formulate one year plan of activities.
The PYA Caraga's new set of officers are: President - Christina Silvosa of Surigao City; Vice President - Rodel Roses, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte; Secretary - Ellen Sambere, Rosario, Agusan del Sur; Treasurer - Vivian Cabrera, Carmen, Surigao del Sur; Auditor - Vicente Eludo, Cagdianao, province of Dinagat Islands; PRO - Ramelyn Sibi, Carmen, Surigao del Sur; Business Manager - William Ganzan, Carmen, Agusan del Norte.
She said this activity was also a preparation for the forthcoming national convention of PYA to be held in Bacolod City this coming October.
There are also contests in poster-slogan making, photo exhibit and essay writing. Butuan City won in the poster-making and photo exhibit contests while Carmen, Surigao del Sur won the essay writing. The winners of these contests wil represent the region in the national convention. (DSWD-13/PIA-13)
13th Siargao int'l surfing tilt kicks off

SURIGAO CITY (September 27) -- The 13th Siargao International Surfing Competition dubbed as the 1st Billabong Cloud 9 invitational officially off September 24, 2007 with 45 surfers from 10 countries participated.
Gen. Luna Mayor Felipe Espejon, Billabong SEA Marketing Director Peter Thew and Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Ace Barbers, shared speeches to welcome and thank the participants and sponsors.
Mayor Espejon was overwhelmed with the influx of tourists and participants visiting the island. "In behalf of our administration, we welcome you (all) with open arms," said Mayor Espejon.
Billabong SEA Marketing Director, Peter Thew thanked their local counterparts for the support. "It's been great to have Billabong involved in the competition," said Thew. He promised that this season's competition will be great and far more exciting than before. Thew also informed everyone that the scope of this year's event has become huge for it now reaches worldwide.
Gov. Ace Barbers, in his message acknowledged the support of the LGU-Gen. Luna and other stakeholders for their contributions. "We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has contributed in the success of this event," said Barbers. "This event, which started 13 years ago as just a local surfing event, became and international surfing competition and hopefully we'll become known worldwide in the next coming years with the help of our friends from the media," he said.
Countries who participated in the opening ceremony and who will compete over the next four days include Australia, Indonesia, France, Japan, New Zealand, The Philippines, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the United States.
Surfing competition began Monday, September 24 at Cloud 9, Tuason Point with the first round of qualifying heats and will end on Sunday, September 30, 2007. (PIA-Surigao del Norte) [top]
