DSWD calls for stronger ties in the observance of Family Week

By Marivic Alcober

Tacloban City (28 September) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Region 8 through its Regional Director Leticia T. Corillo calls on all sectors of our society to join the nation in the observance of National Family Week in their respective areas.

DSWD also sought the support of the church through Archbishop Jose Palma of the Archdiocese of Palo. In said visit to Archbishop Palma, he pledged full support to said undertaking and promised to issue a directive to all parishes to incorporate in their homilies the value of a family, and to highlight violence against women as a pressing social concern.

Likewise, inter-faith organizations are being called upon to be one with the nation and join this celebration, which was proclaimed on September 28, 1992 under Proclamation No. 60.

Dir. Corillo emphasized the importance of family relationships and added that there are families who are successful, happy and have strong family ties who serve as role models in their respective communities.

According to Corillo, "Increasing public awareness on the observance of the National Family Week will lead to an increased public support and participation in the celebration of this yearly event."

To make the celebration more meaningful and significant, DSWD sought the different food chains in the area to hang streamers carrying this year's theme "Makulay ang Buhay ng Pamilyang Matibay". Further, DSWD also requested said food chains to grant special discounts as a sign of support to the celebration.

On their part, the different offices and schools were requested to organize a "Family Day" in their respective areas. Likewise, it was suggested that the schools may conduct an essay writing contest or poster making contest centered on the theme. (PIA-8) [top]
