Region 8 starts national statistics month celebration

Tacloban City (September 28) -- The Opening Ceremonies for the 18th National Statistics Month celebration in the month of October, will be conducted today, September 28, 2007, at 8:00 o'clock in the morning at the NEDA Regional Office 8.

The program which is hosted by the National Statistical Coordination Board, will include presentations on the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in Eastern Visayas, documentary on Ozone Depletion and Global Warming, major components of the Millennium Development Goal Number 7 which is to Ensure Environmental Sustainability, and the launching of the Recognition Awards on MDG Localization.

Anchored on the theme, "Statistics and Action: A Road to Better Life Through the Millennium Development Goals," this year's National Statistics Month celebration, underscores the crucial and significant role of statistics in the pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals, Ms Evangeline Paran of the National Statistical Coordination Board in the Region said.

Statistics provide the basis for monitoring progress achieved on such sustained action since 1990. Being well-informed of these statistics is important for the national and local governments and in the Region's development as partner to take proper action and implement targeted strategies leading to a road to a better life in 2015 and beyond.

The National Statistical Month, which was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month, intends to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society and at the same time elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standard of statistics in the country.

The celebration of the National Statistics Month in the region is being spearheaded by the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee, through the National Statistical Coordination Board in the Region as the secretariat. (PIA 8) [top]
