by Jemin B. Guillermo

Roxas City (28 September) -- The checks of the beneficiaries of the death claims of barangay officials in Capiz are now ready for release, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Operation Services Officer Llanie Destacamento of DILG Capiz announced that the beneficiaries of the death benefits of nine barangay officials who died in 2006 during the incumbency of their term of office are now ready for the release at the DILG Regional Office in Iloilo City.

Destacamento said that death benefits of former punong barangay Bonifacio Balgos of Calitan, Panay, Capiz; barangay treasurer Ruperto Alayon of Cubay, President Roxas; and barangay kagawads Virgilio Esmeņo of Fe, Jamindan; and Benito Sacura of Sta. Cruz, Dumalag town are now ready for release.

In addition, the death claims of barangay kagawads Liberato Barrera Sr. of Tanza Sur, Panay, Lydia Bayhon of Binangig, Panay, Annie Dap-og of Cabangahan, Panitan, Jose Albay of Tanza, Roxas City and William Diez of Calapawan, Dumarao, Capiz are also available.

The claimants of said benefits are also advised to bring with them at least two valid identification cards to be presented at the DILG Regional Office, Destacamento said.

DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno earlier urged the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to release additional funds to pay for the death benefits of barangay officials who died during their term of office.

Executive Order 115 entitles the dependents of the punong barangay, sangguniang barangay members, sangguniang kabataan chairmen, barangay secretaries and treasurers who died during their term of office to claim death benefits, Puno said.

Under said Order, the punong barangay is entitled to P22,000 death claims while the death benefits of other barangay officials is P12,000. (PIA) [top]
