Parents association helps preserve environment

KIANGAN, Ifugao (29 September) -- In an effort to assist the national government and all sectors concerned in the preservation of the environment, the Parents Association of the St. Joseph's School conducted a symposium to 600 students here last September 25.

Magtanggol Soberano, Forester and Information Officer of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), who was invited as one of the speakers appreciated this move by a People's Organization (PO).

"This shows the concern of our POs in the protection and maintenance of our environment," he said.

The DENR brought 100 seedlings of Mahogany to be planted by the students in the school campus. Fr. Sammy Maximo, the School director and the Parish Rector planted the first tree during the ceremonial planting which was done before the symposium.

Municipal Environment Officer Paolo Pinigat informed that the municipal government has maintained 162.92 hectares of watershed areas at Barangays Hucab, Daligan, Bokiawan, Lingay, Nagacadan and Julongan.

"The Municipal government has been protecting our rivers, creeks, lakes and springs through our watershed forest enrichment, " Pinigat said.

On the other hand, Councilor Mary Ananayo, the chairman of the Committee on Environment and also one of the speakers said that the Local Government Unit (LGU) here has enacted ordinances based on national laws.

"Basing on Presidential Decrees # 856 or the Code on Sanitation of the Philippines, the LGU has crafted an ordinance providing the rules and regulations implementing the sanitation code of the municipality," Ananayo said. It shall be the policy of the municipal government to promote and safeguard the health and sanitation of its residents through the proper and safe disposal of its waste, she added.

Another is the municipal waste management ordinance No. 1 series of 1995, the Municipal Ordinance (MO) # 1 series of 1996 known as Zero Waste Management, MO # 3 series of 1994, prohibiting the throwing of garbage littering in public places within the municipality.

Soberano, who gave a briefing on the environment and the roles of students, said that in everything we do to our surroundings will always come back to us. (PIA Ifugao) [top]
