DOLE Kalinga releases P442,905 SPES pay

TABUK CITY (29 September) -- After quite a long wait, students who worked last summer under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), here received their DOLE counterpart pay amounting to P442,905.12.
Lourdes Cansano of DOLE-Kalinga said their office started to release the checks since August and there are still 22 students who did not claim their pay.
Pay checks, according to Cansano, used to be released right after the SPES period from March 29-May 31, but because of changes in the program policy, releases now are made later.
Before, SPES pay can be processed by DOLE and employer-LGUs prior to the submission of proof of enrollment by SPES beneficiaries. Now, students must first enroll in college so they can present proof of enrollment, Cansano said.
This year, 499 students were granted summer jobs under the program. 301 of them were paid under the LGU-DOLE 60-40 contract, while 198 got full pay from LGU-employer.
Republic Act 7323 provides assistance to college students by giving them 20 days work with pay in government agencies, local government units and private institutions during summer.
Cansano clarified, though, that SPES beneficiaries in the province do not get the same pay as LGUs ounterparts vary based on income class.
Because of the SPES rates, which are covered by prevailing minimum wage rate as provided under RA 7323, salaries of casual employees in LGUs have been increased to avoid conflict.
Cansano informed there are 8 SPES claims still pending before their office because of incomplete requirements. She is calling on s those concerned to immediately comply, so they can get their pay checks. (PIA Kalinga) [top]
