LGUs' role vital in tourism development cited

TABUK CITY (29 September) -- The role of local government units in the development of the tourism industry is vital considering that they have the power essential in the promotion ensuring the preservation and enrichment of culture and environment.

This was pointed out by Director Francisco Gamatero, Provincial Director of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Kalinga in his lecture during the recently held Seminar Workshop on Eco Tourism Trade and Industry, Tourist Safety and Security.

He said that the tourism industry being one of the sectors that has the potential to boost the economy of the province and even the country should be a top priority program of the LGUs.

"We should be taking advantage of what we have while we promote and develop sustainable programs to enhance develop this assets. This sector is a powerful economic growth engine if developed in a sustainable manner," he said stressing that the province has several unique features not found in other areas.

He pointed out that this endeavor would require the support of the government in the funding and enforcement of laws especially in the protection and preservation of the culture and the ecology. He noted that the development of the industry is sometimes dependent on the priorities of the elected officials

"There should be an inter-related function between the national and the local government units in the development of programs, promulgation and implementation of laws," he underscored.

He said that local government units through the legislative body should also have to take the development of tourism as a priority and legislate pertinent laws supporting the development of the industry.

He emphasized the need to organize a Local Tourism Council and Local Culture and Arts Council to formulate programs to develop promotion, tourism facilities, infrastructures, adopt and promote accreditation standards, assist in the regulation supervision and monitoring the implementation of the Local Tourism Code, and Local Government Code on matter of licensing of tourism establishment s in the locality ensuring safe and enjoyable stay of tourists and travelers.
