Pacman, Yano visit soldiers in Basilan
Isabela City, Basilan (3 December) -- The Pambansang Kamao Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao, Commanding General of the Philippine Army Lt Gen Alexander B. Yano AFP, and party visited Basilan Wednesday to boost the morale of the soldiers who are in pursuit for peace and development in the said province.
Pacman, who is a Philippine Army reservist with a rank of Master Sergeant, is one of the most lauded characters in the sport of boxing today. Not much distinct from a soldier, he is a fighter too, who is armed with determination, patience, discipline, and patriotism.
Lt Gen. Yano stressed that like Pacquiao, the military is interminably resolute to fight for the interest and welfare of the country and the people. Moreover, he reminded the soldiers of their respective mandated tasks, stressing the importance of teamwork in the success and realization of the Philippine Army's mission.
Pacquiao in his speech fanned the flames of more inspiration and encouragement on the part of our soldiers to go on and continue the fight for the country and the people.
"Ngayon natupad na ang pangarap kong makarating sa Basilan. (My dream to be in Basilan is now fulfilled)," he said.
Meanwhile, Lt Gen. Yano turned over a cash gift to Mrs. Rona Fe Tanangonan, the widowed wife of Cpl Reynaldo Tanangonan, who died fighting the Abu Sayaff Group in Jolo, Sulu last 09 Aug '07.
Sergeant Majors of the different Army units received t-shirts and athletic uniforms doled out by Manny himself, who was assisted by the Army Commanding General. Immediately after, picture taking session followed.
Joint Task Force Thunder Commander B/Gen Juancho M Sabban met the Phil Army Commanding General, Manny and party on their arrival from Sulu in the 1st Marine Brigade grounds at Tabiawan, Isabela City, Basilan.
B/Gen Sabban said that the military is very grateful for Manny's thoughtful gesture. Despite his demanding schedule, he still finds time to spend it with our soldiers here in Basilan. (4CRG-AFP/PIA-BASULTA) [top]
