Davao City Mayor's Cup enters quarterfinals

Davao City (28 December) -- THE Mayor's Cup Holcim Philippines entered its quarterfinals Thursday in a round of 6 with three top qualifiers being seen as the top beats in the yearly meet at the Tionko football field in Davao City.
The Holy Child School of Davao, Ateneo de Davao's teams A and B are the top favorites pitted against Emar Learning Center's team A while Ateneo team B goes up against SOS Children's Village. Emar's team B will play against Ateneo's team A in a quarterfinals matches whom training coaches see as a fitting final salvo for the event-filled football year.
Hopes are high for the consistent development of the game of football in this part of the country as the Davao-based Swiz-Filipino owned cement manufacturing firm promised heighten support with focus on football as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR programs of sports, health and education.
The Mayor's Cup is the flagship football program of the Davao Football Association (DFA) in cooperation with Holcim Philippines which is the city's most consistent sports development partner in the private sector.
Roger Cerbo, CSR manager of Holcim, has earlier promised to channel most of its budget next year for sports for the expansion of the Mayor's Cup regionwide to include the three Davao provinces and their component cities.
Now on its fourth year staging, the inter-high school football tournament, has twelve teams in participation. Holcim's plan to include other provinces is expected to increase school participation of the year-end footbal tournament to as much as thirty teams. (PIA XI) [top]
