P200-million Davao Norte sports complex planned

by RG Alama

Davao City (2 February) -- The old Davao del Norte Provincial sports complex near the provincial capitol complex in Tagum is being planned to be rehabilitated into a modern athletic facility.

According to former Vice-Governor Anthony del Rosario who is now the Executive Assistant to the Provincial Governor, the project is now being evaluated by the Provincial Engineering Office after which the proposal would pass through the Sangguniang Panlalawigan

Anthony's father, Provincial Governor Rodolfo del Rosario has said that he intends to build the sports complex before his term expires in 2010. The estimated P200-million will be sourced from a Land Bank loan. The modern facility will include a grandstand, a rubberized track oval and Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The younger del Rosario said that the sports complex will complement other sports facilities in the province like the modern Panabo Gymnasium and the Tagum City Beach Volleyball Dome.

The beach volleyball dome in Tagum City which is the first in the country is a 5,000-seat capacity beach volleyball arena that has been utilized as a training center for the country's beach volleyball team right before they plunged into action in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand last year.

Also del Rosario bared that the proposed loan will cover not just the Sports Complex but also the planned Legislative building which will be built somewhere in the Capitol Complex. "The present Sangguniang which is located at the back of the Capitol building is bursting at the seams, the Sanggunian needs a new building." Del Rosario said. (PIA) [top]
