PGMA to grace Davao local peace summit

by Noel P. Baguio

Tagum City, Davao del Norte (4 February) -- No less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will grace the Local Peace and Security Assembly (LPSA) in the Davao region, which will be held on February 8, 2008 at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan, here.

Governor Rodolfo P. Del Rosario said everything is now in place for the 7th leg of the local peace summit.

"Everything is now ready with some improvements now being completed at the Bulwagan," the governor said while watching the workers.

Del Rosario added the two-day summit will focus on peace and security, insurgency problem, terrorism, peace process and other concerns affecting the region and the nation.

Participants will be divided into workshop groups wherein their outputs will be presented in a plenary session, where a consensus will be reached for presentation to the President.

National Security Adviser Norberto B. Gonzales will lead the panel of speakers. He is slated to talk about the challenges of peace to the local government officials.

Having the theme, "Peace and Security: Our Shared Responsibility, the summit was initiated by the Office of the President through the National Security Council (NSC). The government is convening the event as it sees the urgent need for greater inter-governmental cooperation and more collaborative effort with the private sector and the civil society, as indispensable in the successful campaign against the threat of lawlessness and terrorism.

The local peace assembly is in accordance with Executive Order 546, signed by President Arroyo in 2006 that stated the important role of local officials in preparing internal security plans in their respective localities and the making of PNP as co-equal partner in the effort of combating insurgencies and terrorism in the country.

Provincial DILG Director Gregorio Versoza revealed they are expecting about 300 participants coming from all the national agencies, local government officials, the PNP, the military, the religious sector, members of the academe, the civil society and various multi-sectoral groups in the Davao region.
