DENR, Holcim ink MOA

Cagayan de Oro City (5 February) -- After three years of fruitful partnership in the rehabilitation of degraded mining areas, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Region 10 and Holcim Philippines Manufacturing Corporation (HPMC) at Lugait, Misamis Oriental recently inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the extension of the Research and Development (R & D) project.

Regional Executive Director Maximo O. Dichoso represented the DENR during the signing of the MOA while Holcim Philippines was represented by Engr. Bobby Sajonia, Vice President for Operations. The signing of the MOA was conducted at the DENR Regional Office in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Research and Development Project on the Rehabilitation of Degraded Mining Areas of Holcim Philippines at Lugait, Misamis Oriental was implemented from January 2005 to December 2007. The extension of the project will be from February 1, 2008 to January 31, 2011. The project was implemented by the Ecosystem Research and Development Service (ERDS) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau of DENR.

Regional Executive Director Maximo Dichoso said that inspite of the utilization of mineral resources Holcim was able to rehabilitate and regreen its compound. "It is a typical company that work on the preservation and protection of the environment, and it practices responsible mining," he stressed.

Director Dichoso added that the success of project is clearly manifested through physical improvement in the Holcim compound and through the testimonies coming from the surrounding areas of Lugait. With the extension of the project to three years he is hopeful that it will create more opportunities for the DENR's Ecosystem Research and Development Service to implement various projects that will further showcase their skills and knowledge.

Holcim Philippines Vice President for Operations Engineer Bobby Sajonia disclosed that the partnership was very productive. He challenged project implementors to continue their partnership with commitment.

ERDS Regional Technical Director (RTD) Danilo Cacanindin and Engr. Julius Baliog, Holcim Manager for Mining, Environment, Corporate Social Responsibility and Real Property signed as witness of the agreement.

Among others, the project aims to rehabilitate degraded areas using suitable tree species and provide technical assistance in the development and management of forest nursery.

With the partnership with DENR, Holcim now boost of a developed lagoon, butterfly lepiary, herbal garden, nursery, orchidarium, establishment of tree and plant yard landscaping and beautification at its plant in Lugait, Misamis Oriental.

Under the new agreement, the DENR-ERDS shall continue implementing previous projects/activities. New projects will be introduced like the establishment of a herbarium, nature trail, agro-forestry demonstration area, fishpond and livelihood projects for its beneficiaries under the Social Development Management Program.

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement was attended by RTD Corazon Galinato of Forest Management Service, RTD Belen Daba for Protected Areas, Wildlife and Coastal Zone Management Service (PAWCZMS), Engr. Ricardo Sasam, Environment Officer of Holcim, project implementors from DENR and other DENR employees. (DENR) [top]
