PhilHealth bares anniversary celebration activities

by EA Abasquez

San Jose, Antique (6 February) -- The Philippine Health Insurance (PhilHealth) brings its services closer to the people in observance of its 13th anniversary with a theme "Responsabling Miyembro, Ginhawa sa Benepisyo".

Junie Sabusap, chief of PhilHealth Antique, said highlighting the celebration are hospital visits provincewide, strengthening of PhilHealth Desk in Hospitals, attending to queries concerning availment of benefits follow-up of claims, conduct of zoning of employers to inform them of the need to enroll workers for PhilHealth coverage.

These activities would intensify PhilHealth information drive, advocacy and networking with various sectors on the benefits that PhilHealth offers Sabusap added.

PhilHealth implementation in the province has been successful both in terms of coverage and providing quality, affordable and accessible health care services. PhilHealth has covered 266,035 member/dependents as of December 31, 2007. Members belong to various sector or categories to include sponsored programs such as the indigency coverage, employed sectors both in government and private employees, individually paying members, the Overseas Filipino Workers and the non-paying members like the retirees of the Social Security System (SSS) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and the self employed.

The PhilHealth benefits that members and dependents could avail include among others hospital room accommodation, medicines, x-ray and laboratory procedures, physician's fee, surgery, anesthesiologist and operating room fees.

PhilHealth also intensifies its marketing campaign to tap the organized groups for coverage like the drivers' association, market vendors, farmers/fisherfolks, migrant workers (sacadas) and other vulnerable groups who need quality health care services. Through the intensified information drive, PhilHealth is on track of attaining a universal coverage by 2010.

The earnest effort for a comprehensive coverage is part of PhilHealth contribution to the Hunger Mitigation Program as healthy citizens help propel the engine of productivity and development.

According to Sabusap a big part of the Expanded Value Added Tax collection goes to premium contributions under the PhilHealth indigency program. (PIA) [top]
