NSO trains barangay secretaries to be civil registrants

by Mhars B. Lihgawon

LAGAWE, Ifugao (8 February) -- To achieve a 100 percent registration in the province, the National Statistics Office (NSO) here is training barangay secretaries of the different municipalities to be civil registrants.

Esther Dulnuan, Provincial NSO officer said that barangay secretaries will be trained to document births, deaths and marriages occurring in their respective barangays for submission to the Municipal Civil Registrar's Office (MCRO).

"One of their functions is assisting the Municipal Civil Registrars (MCRs) and to ensure a complete and correct of vital events such as births, deaths and marriages in their respective locality most especially in the far flung areas," she said.

Dulnuan explained that among the problems they encounter in the registration are misspelled names, incorrect birth dates and sex and unregistered people. "Some of our clients came to get their live births but only to find out that they were not registered so we advise them to go for late registration," she lamented.

Aside from attaining a 100 percent registration is the adoption of Barangay Civil Registration System to achieve a complete coverage and timely registration of vital events in the barangays particularly births, deaths and marriages as stipulated in the Provincial Children's Code that was recently approved for implementation.

A mobile and free registration will be conducted also to the different barangays of the province, Dulnuan added. (PIA Ifugao) [top]
