PIA Press Release

NOLCOM downplays claim of increased guerilla fronts

CAMP ALLEN, Baguio City (8 February) -- Simon Naugsan, the self-confessed spokesperson of the Cordillera People's Democratic Front (CPDF) is either hallucinating or living in fantasy land when he claimed in a major daily that the number of guerilla fronts increased from 100 to 230 and that they are capable of mounting attacks against the government to defeat the AFP/government's timetable of crushing rebellion by 2010.

This is the general reaction of government forces tasked to confront the NPA fronts who have painstakingly went through with the clearing process to make sure that the communities previously affected or threatened by the rebels are free from their influence and evils schemes.

"If there is one that is capable of lying, it is no other than Naugsan himself" said NOLCOM Chief Lieutenant General Rodrigo Maclang because according to him, there is no way that the people can verify his claims, whereas the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) just like any other unit of the AFP follows a stringent process of validating the troops' accomplishments especially when it involves the clearing of CPP/NPA guerilla fronts.

"It is not solely the AFP which determines if an area is cleared since the local chief executives and other stakeholders are directly involved in the validation process", he said.

The truth of the matter, according to the NOLCOM Chief, is that the enemy have broken down their remaining guerilla fronts into skeletal forces to make it appear that their number is increasing. There are even some instances when they merged units to be able to withstand the superior forces of the government.

Lt. Gen. Maclang is not surprised that the CPP/NPA/NDF is resorting to cheap and vicious propaganda because they have no way of vindicating themselves in the eyes of the public considering their weakened armed capability and dying popular support. They wanted to project a strong fighting force especially with the forthcoming 39th anniversary of the New People's Army (NPA) barely two (2) months from now.

Self-confessed spokesperson of the CPP/NPA units were quick in fabricating combat statistics especially in the Ilocos and Cordillera regions hoping that the public will blindly accepts their self-serving declarations. The truth is, majority of the civilian populace are already aware of their duplicity and would not want to be forever fooled, used and abused by this ragtag bandits who demand to be fed as they are unemployed and totally reliant on their victims for their daily sustenance not to mention their whims or caprices.

The NOLCOM Chief said the troops will continue to seize the momentum and will not allow any opportunity for the enemy to recover their losses. For 2008, the dismantling of five (5) more guerilla fronts are subject for validation and with better intelligence and combat capability. It is expected that more communist terrorist personalities will be neutralized and more firearms will be recovered. This will be equally complemented by sustained civil-military operations which will focus on projects and activities that will help alleviate the plight of our people especially in the depressed areas, in coordination with local government units and agencies.

The optimistic outlook for 2008 is centrally anchored on the direct involvement and active leadership as expressed by local chief executives and local government units in addressing insurgency as a whole. NOLCOM will focus its efforts along this line, given the favorable manifestations of local officials/units, and even of other sectors of society in the area of responsibility. (11th CRU) [top]
