Commentary: The urgency of a united and strong nation

By Henry S. Lagasca

San Fernando City, La Union (13 February) -- Major threats facing the world's leading industrial countries prompted the Arroyo administration to implement immediately action plans to ride out the storm of the expected global economic slowdown on the local economy.

President Arroyo's opening statement during the recent Cabinet meeting in Malacanang cited the urgency for the government to focus its spending to accelerate completion of infrastructure and pro-poor projects to fuel the engine of economic growth and enhance agricultural production.

The President has called on every patriotic Filipino to unite in the midst of the political noise to thwart the threat of a slowdown on the local economy which has been on a roll and is now one of the best performing in the Asia-Pacific region.

On the recent political drama brought about by Senate hearings on the controversial ZTE-NBN project, PGMA urged everyone to remain united in upholding our constitutional democracy and let judicial processes and institutions to deliberate such issues democratically.

PGMA's 3-point action plan to solve the problems posed by red tape and corruption in the bureaucracy is now being addressed to create an investor-attractive environment.

Much more needs to be done, especially in bringing to the poor the bounties of our economic expansion and fiscal strength and in making government institutions less prone to corruption and abuse and more responsive to the needs and aspirations of our people.

In citing the need to gird for slowdown of global economy, President Arroyo, once more, stressed the word UNITY which is about action, not discussion. Unity is a real aspiration that manifests itself through progress by working together and not just talking together.

Every patriotic Filipino must strive for greater integrity, hard work, compassion, mutual understanding and peace, and to unite in common cause for our family and community. (PIA Region 1) [top]
