PIA Press Release

No abandonment of Calbayog-Gatanguit, Gatanguit-Calbiga road projects, DPWH says

Tacloban City (February 13) -- Contrary to reports, the Calbayog-Gatanguit and the Gatanguit-Calbayog Road projects in the province of Samar have not been abandoned, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 8 Director Jaime Pacanan stressed in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency.

The good director explained that there have only been delays in the pouring of cement and asphalt overlay because of the weather condition which has been prevailing in the area for quite sometime.

Nevertherless, Director Pacanan said that while there is a delay in the pouring and asphalting, the contractors continues to do other works in the project like preparation of the base and the drainage component of the Projects.

Director Pacanan called on the public to inform the nearest DPWH office on whatever concerns they have regarding projects being undertaken under the Department, so that these concerns will be readily and easily addressed, verified and corrected.

The Calbayog-Gatanguit Road Section is under Package III of the Arterial Road Link Development Project and entails the improvement and upgrading of about 52.7 kilometers of existing road. The project, Director Pacanan informed started in November of 2006 and is scheduled to be completed by August of 2009.

On the other hand, the Gatanguit-Calbiga Road Section which is Phase !V of the Arterial Road Link Development Project, calls for the improvement and upgrading of about 59.53 kilometers of existing road. The Project commenced on January 16, 2007 and is scheduled to be completed in December of 2009, Director Pacanan said.

These Road Sections are the usual cause of complaints of commuters. Once the rehabilitation of these road sections are completed, land travel to Samar will already become easier and more comfortable and enjoyable. (PIA 8) [top]
