NAPC, GK seek to reduce poverty by half in 2010

by A. Lumaque

Roxas City (15 February) -- The Gawad Kalinga (GK) has collaborated with the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) in the effort to reduce poverty by half in 2010.

GK is a simple Couples for Christ (CFC) initiative that has evolved into a growing multi-sectoral partnership driven by the same spirit and vision. The bayanihan of volunteers and the poor themselves as the essence of the project brings transformation of slums into a beautiful and peaceful community.

This was announced by NAPC lead convenor and Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban adding that a strong partnership with GK could help transform the gains of the booming economy into people-centered growth with stronger focus on priority provinces of the country.

GK head Tony Meloto said in a NAPC online news that he decided to ally with NAPC in its poverty alleviation programs because he is confident with Secretary Panganiban's integrity to push a strong partnership to help the poor.

To date, Gawad Kalinga is in over 1,500 communities all over the Philippines. The goal of GK is to build 700,000 houses till 2010.

"Meloto described Panganiban as anti-poverty "czar," who can turn the most disadvantaged corners of the country into zones of opportunity and development. Meloto said that as former Agriculture Secretary, Panganiban's talents can help GK," the news added.

GK's vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.

The objective of the alliance, Panganiban said, is to collaborate with local government units and stakeholders to reduce the incidence of poverty by half in 2010.

The ten poorest provinces as indicated in the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) survey of 2003 are Zamboanga del Norte, Masbate, Maguindanao, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Mountain Province, Lanao del Norte, Camarines Norte, Saranggani and Zamboanga Sibugay. (PIA/NAPC) [top]
