Bicolano student writers to compete in nat'l journalism tilt in Koronadal City

by A Alcazar-Naz

Legazpi City (15 February) -- A total of 1,428 elementary and secondary student writers from 17 regions of the country including 84 students from Bicol region will vie for honors in 7 different categories in print and broadcast journalism in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Region XII.

The annual biggest academic event in the education department will converge budding writers including their coaches and Department of Education (DepEd) officials will have more than 3,000 individuals participating.

Now on its 62nd year staging for secondary schools and 10th year for elementary level, the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) 2008 set February 18-22 has the theme Promoting Consumers' Rights through Campus Journalism.

Dr. Celedonio L. Layon, Jr., DepEd Bicol regional director, while congratulating the delegation said that the week-long competition is useless without in mind the essence of enriching the journalistic potentials of the young campus journalists.

DepEd has announced the champions in seven events in two categories, English and Filipino selected from 39 competitors per event in the elementary and 65 contestants in the secondary held separately last year. The Regional Elementary Schools Press Conference was held in Naga Central School, Naga City last Dec. 4-7, while the Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference was conducted in Basud National High School in Camarines Norte.

Layon exhorted the contestants "to bring home the bacon again like in previous years.

Bicol was back-to-back champion both for elementary and secondary levels during the NSPC 2003 held in Cebu. Last year's NSPC 2007 held in Baguio City, Bicol was first runner-up for secondary level.

The conduct of the annual NSPC is based on the provisions of RA 7079 or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.

Group contests in best campus newspapers will be determined while a team composed of seven regional winners will vie for broadcast events to include best script, best presentation, best anchor in both elementary and secondary levels. Selection was conducted last February 8.

A new group contest, this time TV broadcasting will start this year. (PIA V) [top]
