PGMA declares Feb. 25, Monday, a special non-working day

Manila (19 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared Monday, February 25, a Special Non-Working Day throughout the country by virtue of Proclamation No. 1462 to mark the 22nd Anniversary of EDSA People Power.

The theme for this year's observance is "Kapayapaan at Pagkakaisa Tungo sa Kaunlaran."

"Whereas, the historic event, which restored and ushered political, social and economic reforms in the country, serves as an inspiration to Filipinos everywhere as we continue to chart our collective course as a nation and as a people, it is fitting that the entire Filipino nation be given the opportunity to observe this milestone in our country," President Arroyo said.

The bloodless popular revolt where hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians marched fearlessly down the streets in the nation's capital amid military tanks and machine guns toppling the more than 20 years of Marcos dictatorship became one of the Philippine's historical pride.

Popularly known as 'People Power,' the historical event became a source of pride for every Filipino as the world stared at the Philippines in a new light, full of global admiration and inspired by the collective strength and unity shown by the Filipinos.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment has long announced that those who will report to work on a holiday will get an additional percentage on top of the daily wage. For special holidays, an employee who will report to work will get 30 percent more on top of his daily earnings and 100 percent in case of regular holidays. (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]
