Dipolog City (19 February) -- A grade five pupil and a second year high school student from the schools division of Zamboanga del Norte have emerged as champions in the recently concluded national sci-dama competitions in power patrol and electro sci-dama categories, respectively.
Neil Christian T. Culanculan, a grade five pupil of Nabilid Elementary School in barangay Nabilid of Roxas town, was declared national champion in sci-dama power patrol category after winning eight times in a round robin game against other contestants from the different regions nationwide.
Another national champion in sci-dama competitions was Moly Abellar, a first year high school student of Langatian National High School also of Roxas town. He beat other players in electro sci-dama with no loss.
Coming home with a bronze medal is a second year high school student Ronnie James Acedo who landed third in the sci-dama notation category. Acedo, who also came from Langatian National High School, had a triple tie for the championship round with regions 7 and 8, registering the same wins and losses. He finally got third because of the "win-over-the-other" policy.
Mrs. Evelyn V. Dionaldo, Culanculan's coach, recalled that her contestant "took a hard time playing against the player from the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), winning by only half point over his opponent."
The two student-contestants from Langatian National High School were coached by teacher Primo T. Dionaldo, the better half of Culanculan's coach.
The Dionaldo couple beamed with pride to have brought home laurels from the national sci-dama competitions. (PIA-ZN) [top]
