NTC reminds stores selling smuggled cellphones to register

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (20 February) -- The National Telecommunication (NTC) in region eleven is reminding all stores selling smuggled cellular phones and unregistered cell phone repair shops to register their respective business establishments.

NTC XI Director Joshue DeVilla Go said even those establishments in the provinces are also required to have their businesses registered and comply with the law including the registration requirements.

The consuming public and cellphone owners who are commonly victimized by unscrupulous traders and repair shop owners should be protected.

Repair shops must also get accreditation from the Technical Educational Schools Development Authority (TESDA) so that they will be authorized and have legal personality once registered with the NTC.

The entry of smuggled cellphones is a loss on the part of the government and the buyers because custom duties can not be imposed and buyers will be deprived of consumer's protection.

Each cellular phone must have its own international mobile equipment identification number. This identification number of the serial number will also protect the owner in case the unit is lost or for other purposes.

The NTC is reminding all cellphone owners to record their serial number because this is required when units are blocked. (PIA) [top]
