Breastfeeding given focus in nutrition campaign

by RB Manlangit

Daet, Camarines Norte (21 February) -- The Provincial Nutrition Action Office (PNAO) has enjoined the Municipal Action Officers (MNAOs) and other health personnel to step-up the campaign for breastfeeding in their respective areas.

In a meeting held here, Mercedes M. Jaun, PNAO chief, said that breastfeeding should be given to babies right after birth to avoid malnutrition which starts at six months old. Studies show that majority of malnourished children are mostly in the one-year-old level.

Juan said that children should receive the right vaccine and Vitamin A which are given free in the health centers.

She urged the group to include in the campaign the information for the mothers to take Vitamin A with iron for them to have healthy babies adding that a future mother at the age of 12 should start taking said vitamins.

Meanwhile, in the food for school program of the government, Marilou Apuang, representative from the DepEd Provincial Office said that the program is on-going wherein for this year there are allocations for noodles good for 36 days and rice for 35 days to be given to children in public schools.
