Int'l travel show to feature Davao, Mindanao

Davao City (23 February) -- Davao and Mindanao will be featured in an international travel show in Germany.
This was the announcement made by Tourism Secretary Ace Joseph Durano who opened the 2nd Davao International Travel Show on leisure and lifestyle at the SM City Davao on Friday. The Davao Travel Show will run until February 24, 2008.
Durano said the travel show is the biggest International Travel in Berlin, Germany where the Philippine booth will highlight the destinations of Davao and other parts of Mindanao.
ITB Berlin is the world's leading travel and trade show that will be held in Berlin, Germany on March 5 to 9, 2008.
There will be 10,856 exhibitors from 180 countries and regions and covers the entire spectrum of international travel and tourism. Over 100,000 trade professionals attend ITB Berlin annually together with thousands of the international press, making it the largest travel and tourism event in the world. Its leading position as a truly international meeting place for buyers, sellers, and the media makes ITB as must-attend event for business, information gathering and networking.
The ITB Berlin 2008 Convention Market Trends and Innovation offers an international program of professional presentations and networking opportunities.
Durano said what they will feature about Adventure Davao among others are the Mt Apo mountain climbing, the various sites of scuba diving at the Davao Gulf, Philippine Eagle Center, water rafting, trekking, kayaking and other related events.
Meanwhile, he said Davao already has the market power and this contributes to the economy of the country where tourism will play a great role.
Durano said with the travel show held here in Davao they also would like people of Davao and those from other parts of Mindanao see the places outside of the region and other parts of the world.
"We encourage people to travel even within the Philippines to see for themselves what is there in the other parts of the country. This will also help educate the public about our country," he said.
A Davao tourism leader and chair of the BIMP EAGA Tourism Council, Mary Ann Montemayor said it was their first time to hear Secretary Durano announced Davao's taking center stage in prestigious international show like the ITB Berlin 2008.
"This really is a gesture of national government helping out the tourism industry of Mindanao and we in the private sector welcome very much this support," she said.
She said considering that participating in international show like ITB Berlin in Europe is very costly and that tour operators would not be able to participate in such big event., Montemayor expressed her gratefulness to the DOT for the support to the tourism sector..
"This is also being complemented by the Davao City government under the leadership of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte through Vice Mayor Sara Duterte," she said.
She said the vice mayor had already opened communication lines with the private sector even as she said that with this event in Davao City they are expecting a more aggressive tourism in the coming months.
The opening of the 2nd DavaoTravel Show was also attended by international guests namely the Chairman of the BIMP EAGA Working Group of Air Linkages Brunei Darassalam, Ang Kian Guan, Deputy Chair of BETC from Sarawak, Malaysia Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Chair of BEBC Manado, Indonesia, Bernardino Vega, Deputy Chair of BETC for Brunei Darussalam, Yan Ai Lo, Consul General Lalu Malik Partawan of Indonesian Consulate, Consul General Koji Mitsuy of the Japanese Consulate, other tourism officials and local government officials.
