Crisis center shields abused women, abandoned kids

By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu, Philippines (25 February) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7) Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) in Central Visayas has served more than 43,000 individuals in 2007, three times more than the number of clients served in 2006.

DSWD-7 regional director, Teodulo Romo, Jr. in a radio interview said that the center has assisted family heads in crises situations, children in need of special protection, children in conflict with the law, women in difficult circumstances, victims of domestic violence, persons with disabilities, deportees, abandoned children and elderly, victims of trafficking, disasters and expatriates.

The CIU served as a temporary shelter for abandoned, abused and trafficked children and it also provides services that include transportation assistance to stranded individuals, clothing, food, temporary shelter and emergency shelter assistance to victims of disasters, Romo added.

Congressmen Raul Del Mar, Tony Cuenco and Nerissa Soon-Ruiz have set aside funds from their respective Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) for the center. Del Mar gave P34.9-million while Cuenco and Ruiz gave P8.68-million and 3.35-million respectively.

Romo said that most of the funds went to medical assistance, hospitalization, medicines, lab examinations and procedures.

The DSWD-7 director thanked the congressmen for funding the needs of the center and urged the other congressmen to allocate some funds from their PDAF for their constituents who are in dire need of protection and welfare.

Just recently, Romo said, Congressman Ben-Hur Salimbangon of the 4th district pledged to allocate P2-million from his PDAF for the burial assistance to indigents. (PIA-Cebu) [top]
