PIA Press Release

Benefits due Capiz barangay officials settled

by Jemin B. Guillermo

Roxas City (29 February) -- All the death claims of barangay officials in Capiz were already paid, says the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

According to Llanie Destacamento, Operation Services Officer of DILG Capiz, the death benefits for barangay officials who died during the incumbency of their term in 2006 were already paid by the government.

Destacamento said that for 2007, they had already submitted to the Department of Budget and Finance the request for the payment of 18 death claims in the province.

She said that of said claims, 13 of which were intended for Barangay Kagawad at P12,000 each, 3 Punong Barangays at P22,000 each and one barangay treasurer and one barangay secretary at P120 each.

Recently, DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno expressed gratitude to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the DBM for the prompt release of additional funds for the payment of the unpaid death benefits for barangay officials and their beneficiaries nationwide.

Puno said the timely and immediate release of the death benefits is a big help to the families and loved ones of our barangay officials who died while in service.

He explained that the payment of death benefits to barangay officials who died during their term of office is authorized under Executive Order No. 115.

Earlier, Puno requested the DBM to allocate P12,682,000 in order to augment the P37-million budget appropriation for the payment of death benefits of barangay officials in the last quarter of 2007.

At the same time, he also sought the release of P152,000 from last year's remaining available balance of P158,000 in order to effect immediate payment to claimants. (PIA) [top]
