San Miguel town sponsors 1st San Miguel chess tournament

Butuan City (29 February) -- The municipality of San Miguel, Surigao del Sur recently sponsored the 1st ever chess tournament held last week at the new public market of the town.
Flaselbert Patis and Aljun Intano of Kiddies and Junior Categories bags the P1,000 championship prize each of the LGU sponsored 1st San Miguel Chess Tournament last February 22-24, 2008 at New Public Market, Poblacion this municipality.
Other winners of the kiddies category (12 y.o. under) were: 1st runner up Jonathan Peralta get P700.00; 2nd runner-up Julimar Cortina (P500.00); 3rd Brisk Earl G. Deocares; 4th runner-up Johnsil T. Piala; 5th Aerl Vryan C. Espenido; 6th runner-up Rolen P. Quenca; 7th runner-up Gernor Dela Peña; 8th runner-up Maria Renziel H. Moncano; and 9th runner-up Cesarree Jones G. Ugot all received P50.00.
In the junior category (20 y.o. under) winners are: 1st runner up Rian Pentin (P700 prize); 2nd runner up Jay Mar Vanguardia (P500.00); 3rd to 9th runner-ups get P50.00 each were Abegail Joy Patan, Robert Jalbuena, Pammaela Nimfa Gawat, Charmeine Sheen G. Deocares, Ronnel Lucentes, Vyder Glenn Sarin and Lhyxtierre Khynt Doe Baldovino.
According to Diwata Chess Club President PO3 Elmer B. Deocares PNP, organizer of LGU sponsored chess tournament this is the first time a chess tournament in the municipality intended for young kids, junior players and to promote camaraderie, awareness of the game. The winners will be trained to compete in the national tourney in the near future. He also added that he thanked the parents of the participants, school teachers for the support, donors and sponsors.
The event was organized by Diwata Chess Club, sponsored by the Local Government Unit of San Miguel headed by Mayor Alfeo G. Perez, Jr., Vice Mayor Asciencion M. Aya-ay, Sangguniang Bayan Members, SK Federation President Nilfredes L. Lamigo, and Provincial Administrator Johnny T. Pimentel.
