Popcen result out next month - NSO

Kalibo, Aklan (29 February) -- The official result of the national Census of Population (POPCEN) will be possibly out in March, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO) here.
Provicial Statistics Officer of NSO-Aklan Blas Solidum said here that census papers from Aklan are already in Manila and together with results coming from various provinces and cities, are now undergoing final evaluation.
Solidum said the evaluation process include justifications by concerned officials why a certain area registered a slowdown in population despite anticipated increase based on projections.
After final evaluation of census results, Solidum said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo then will issue an executive proclamation to make the result official.
The Census of Population was conducted throughout the country on August 2007.
In Aklan, result of the provincial population is much anticipated as it could determine the creation of another congressional district here.
Local officials here believe that two congressional districts will be good for the province as it will have two representatives working for further progress of Aklan.
Solidum said however that based on raw census result, the creation of another district is not possible at this time because the increase of Aklan's population was very minimal.
Solidum attributed this to Aklanons' migration to other provinces in the country to seek better livelihood opportunities, and to their going out of the country to work as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
The NSO Provincial Officer expressed optimism, however, that in the next POPCEN schedule probably in 2010, Aklan's dream of having two congressional districts might be realized.
Solidum said the 2007 POPCEN should have been conducted in 2005 but due to reenacted budget that year, the activity did not push through. With the original schedule, it is anticipated by the NSO here that the next POPCEN will be in 2010. (PIA) [top]
