Zambo Norte Press Club conducts journalism seminar in Labason town

Labason, Zamboanga Norte (24 July) -- More than 250 high school students have attended the campus journalism workshop held here by the Zamboanga del Norte Press Club recently.
The budding campus journalists coming from the different secondary schools of Labason and Gutalac towns were taught the basics of writing news stories, feature articles and editorials as well as other techniques in coming up with a school paper.
After each lecture, a writing contest among the participants followed with the resource persons serving as judges.
The winners were given cash prizes, courtesy of the National Transmission Corporation (TRANSCO), and medals from the Zamboanga del Norte provincial government headed by Governor Rolando E. Yebes.
The students who emerged as winners during the campus journalism seminar in this town were as follows: Newswriting-English, Jevelyn A. Lagumbay of Kipit Agro-Fishery High School (KAFHS) first, Rechel B. Aying of Saint Mary's College of Labason (SMCL) second, and Gerand Mae Zayas of Ubay National High School (UNHS) third.
For newswriting in Filipino, the winners all came from Ubay National High School, namely, Persival Rosales, Ruby Rose Nacario and Donabelle R. Acaso who garnered first, second and third places, respectively.
In feature writing-English, Ailyn L. Viola of Gutalac National High School (GNHS) got first, Aichi Ken Gamulo of SMCL second, and Cziarra Joana Cerezo of UNHS, third. For Filipino, Alexa Potayre of GNHS bagged first place, Persival Rosales of UNHS second, and Annie Campaner of Southern Peninsula College (SPC) third.
For editorial writing-English, the winners were Vanna Mae V. Orog of SMCL first, Nicole Faye Bacorro of SMCL second, and Isha Grace Vallinas of UNHS third. In Filipino, first place went to Flora Mae Visande of UNHS, Anni Campaner of SPC second and Alexa Potayre third.
The winners of sports writing-English were Gerand May Zayas of UNHS first, Vanissa Limboy of SMCL second, and Lea Marie G. Bernido third. In Filipino, Jericho Celeste of GNHS got first, Cherrielyn D. Pajuay of UNHS second, and Ruby Rose Nacario third.
For copyediting-English, Cziarra Joana Cerezo of UNHS got first, Jecil Anne P. Tejada of SMCL second and Leo Vanjun Martinez of SMCL third. In Filipino, Rolyn Sumile of UNHS got first, Mayeth Garcia of GNHS second and Elvira Lagud third.
For editorial cartooning-English, Henri Marte Isagan of SMCL got first, Kennette Javier of SPC second and Argie Canonayon of UNHS third. In Filipino, the winners were Roger Roperos of GNHS first, Junrey Ducoy of GNHS second and Rey Mark Sappal of UNHS third.
Active members of the Zamboanga del Norte Press Club have served as lecturers during the writing workshop, namely, Editha Pagente-Tomong for newswriting, Rosemarie Patangan-Miranda for feature writing, Ronillo Lee for copyediting and lay-outing, Franklin P. Gumapon for editorial writing, Samuel Amatong for editorial cartooning, Dennis Garay for sports writing, and Atty. Roseller Barinaga for laws on libel.
The annual campus journalism seminar project, which is conducted by the Zamboanga del Norte Press Club to high school students for free, is supported by the Zamboanga del Norte provincial government, Transco, Department of Education (DepED) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
The next leg for the campus journalism seminar will be in Liloy town for students from the municipalities of Kalawit, Tampilisan, Liloy, Salug, Godod and Leon B. Postigo. (PIA-ZN) [top]
