Southern Leyte, Maasin leaders cite unity, people's support

by Bong Pedalino

Maasin City (August 4) -- Everything boiled down to expressions of a united leadership front for this city, the province, and the legislative district office on the opening salvo August 1 which heralded the 8th Charter Day anniversary celebration of this city on August 10.

City Mayor Maloney Samaco, for one, was grateful for the support extended to the city local government unit by Gov. Damian Mercado and Rep. Roger Mercado.

He said this year's charter anniversary theme, "Maasin Atong Siyudad Atong Mahalon" or MASAM (Maasin our city our beloved) revolved around a collective effort.

"The city is not ours only, or mine only, but belongs to all of us. Each of us has a stake here, so let us be proud of this city and let us love it," Mayor Samaco, speaking in the local dialect, told the crowd in front of the city hall attending the opening salvo rites.

This year's budget for the celebration had been reduced by P500,000 due to a recent decrease in the internal revenue allotment (IRA), so from P 2.5 million, it is now P 2 million, Samaco said, but he assured that the fun, excitement, and the line-up of daily activities, even their intensity, remained the same.

Gov. Damian Mercado confirmed that the provincial government has been behind the city's efforts to have a positive change and development.

"We will work together and accomplish more for our people," Gov. Mercado said, adding that the success of the city also translates to a success on the part of the province.

For Cong. Mercado, the spirit of cooperation among the three leaders was so strong that with such kind of "teamwork we can never go wrong."

The solon said the twin occasions of charter day and annual fiesta for this year will be "a grand celebration", happening as it will be just in time with the Beijing Olympics' opening on August 8 which preceded the two local celebrations.

He said he would continue with the widening of city streets projects covering national and provincial highways, such as from barangay Pasay to Canturing, and barangay Bagtican to Tigbawan.

He would also continue giving seedlings so "Maasin city would be a model in the program of tree planting."

As to the shortfall in the budget as earlier stated by Mayor Samaco, Cong. Mercado said the amount of P500,000 will be shared "from me and Gov. Mercado" to cover for the said loss.

Now that's unity and teamwork matched with concrete action. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
