Book distribution highlights 2008 Nutrition Month celebration of Carmen

Butuan City (5 August) -- The municipality of Carmen, Surigao del Sur celebrated the 34th Nutrition Month with the theme "Sa Wastong Nutrisyon ni Mommy Seguradong Healthy si Baby". The month-long celebration started with the hanging of the streamers for public awareness on the first day of July.

It was followed by the simultaneous conduct of the house to house evaluation for the eight barangays by a designated evaluating team headed by Rural Sanitation Inspector Maximo D. Guarte and the mother's class by the RHU personnel headed by Dr. Brenda M. Valerio Fuentes on the second and third week of the month.

This year's commemoration ended with a culminating program on July 30 at the Carmen Gymnasium. Activities of the program include the opening parade in the morning participated by the members of the PNP Carmen station headed by COP PI Dominador A. Plaza, the pre-schoolers of Carmen Central Elementary School and Carmen Christian Learning Center and the day care pre-schoolers of the nine day care centers of the municipality. Joining also were the contestants of the Nutrition Quiz Bee and Cooking Contests together with the chaperons for both the elementary and secondary levels.

It was also participated by the officials of the eight barangays headed by the respective barangay captains namely; Hon. Ronnie S. Iligan of Hinapoyan, Hon. Elegorio T. Cuartero of Esperanza, Hon. Angel C. Calumba of Cancavan, Hon. Santos O. Roz of Antao, Hon. Antonio B. Borda, Jr. of Sta. Cruz, Hon. Pedro T. Lauron of Puyat, Hon. Pedrito B. Lequit of San Vicente and Hon. Vicente E. Bantugan of barangay Poblacion.

The barangay nutrition scholars, barangay health workers, officers of the senior citizens, women's and other civil society organizations, national and municipal officials and employees headed by the honorable mayor Antonio T. Borda, Jr. also joined the parade with the Carmen Central Elementary School and Carmen National Agricultural High School Drum and Lyre Corps.

After the parade, a short program followed with the opening prayer led by Hon. SBM Harvey S. Manawatao. Hon. Algerico G. Guiral, the municipal vice mayor warmly welcomed everyone in attendance in his welcome greetings. The reading of the criteria, mechanics and the presentation of the board of judges in the different contests lined-up for the day like cooking contest, "tabo ng bayan", best presentation of the pre-schoolers, nutrition quiz bee and the model barangay based on the results of the house to house evaluation then followed.

The honorable mayor Antonio T. Borda, Jr. gave his message giving emphasis on the theme, where he stressed that the responsibility of giving proper nutrition to the mothers to ensure the health of the baby must always be shared by the mother and father. He further emphasized that eating nutritious food is not enough but the parents should lead a healthy lifestyle.

The SB chairman on Health, Hon. Daisyre K. Semafranca also gave a message for the celebration where she was very thankful to the barangay captains and other barangay officials, the Dep-Ed family and to the members of the Municipal Nutrition Council for all efforts exerted to make the celebration a success. Simple as it was yet the impact was great particularly to the children and the parents.

The winners of the different contests were as follows: Model Barangay - Antao; Tabo ng Bayan - barangay Esperanza; Best Presentation for the pre-schoolers - Day Care pre-schoolers of barangay Cancavan under daycare worker Gregoria L. Raz: Cooking Contest Elementary Level - San Vicente Elementary School contestants, Rhea Mae Derigay and Daisy Mae Panesa; Cooking Contest Secondary Level - Carmen National Agricultural High School contestants, Emmanuel C. Desuyo Jr. and Emelyn Buar; Quiz Bee Elementary Level - Ma. Chrissa Espin of Esperanza Integrated School and Quiz Bee Secondary Level - Jenny Apique of Esperanza Integrated School. Prizes in the form of cash were awarded to the winners by the Chairman of the Municipal Nutrition Council, the municipal mayor assisted by the municipal vice mayor.

The month-long celebration was highlighted with the distribution of books to pre-schoolers of the nine day care centers, Christian Learning Center, Carmen Central and Puyat Elementary School pre-schoolers, another source of "nutritious food" for the children to enhance their mental abilities in preparation for their bright future, courtesy of the honorable Congressman of the 1st District of Surigao del Sur, Philip A. Pichay from out of his Priority Development Assistance Fund. This added glitter to the culminating program as the parents and the day care workers in unison expressed their heartfelt thanks to the honorable congressman through the office of the municipal mayor.
