Legazpi City (5 Aug) -- The municipality of Labo in Camarines Norte, the Children International based in Tabaco City, and the Junior Chamber International in Legazpi City are among the awardees from Bicol for the 2008 Gawad Kalasag.

As the culminating activity for the observance of July as National Disaster Consciousness Month, trophies are awarded to the winners of 'Gawad Kalasag' for Best Local Disaster Coordinating Council, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on Humanitarian Assistance, Private/Volunteer Organizations, Government Emergency Managers, and Heroic Act/Deed of Individuals/Groups During Emergency Response and Rescue Operations.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday, August 1 in simple rites held in Malacaņang, led the presentation of the 'Gawad Kalasag' for the Best Provincial Disaster Council (PDCC), the Best City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC), highly urbanized / Independent Component/Component City categories; the Best Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC), 1st to 3rd Class and 4th to 6th Class categories; the Best Barangay Disaster Coordinating Council (BDCC), urban and rural categories.

Together with two other local government units, Labo town in Camarines Norte was elevated to the Gawad Kalasag Hall of Fame under the 1st to 2nd Class Municipality category.

Children International based in Tabaco City was awarded the 'Gawad Kalasag' for NGOs on Humanitarian Assistance while the Junior Chamber International in Legaspi City won in the private/volunteer organizations category.

Given special citations were Cedric Daep, head of the Albay Provincial Disaster Management Office, and Dr. Carlos C. Galvez action officer of the Labo municipal disaster coordinating council.
