Feature: Scholarship program for children of small-scale fisherfolk

Pili, Camarines Sur (5 Aug) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in the continuing support to the country's fisherfolk communities, once again offers a scholarship to children of small-scale fisherfolk, who are interested to pursue four-year B.S. Fisheries Course starting on the 1st Semester of SY 2009-2010.

According to BFAR Bicol regional director Dennis V. del Socorro, this scholarship program provides three slots for Bicolano high school graduates who have not yet enrolled in college due to financial difficulties.

A scholar under the program shall be entitled to free matriculation and other fees; monthly stipend of P2,500; semestral book allowance of P2,000; thesis support of P3,000; and graduation support of P500.

Interested applicants should meet the following qualifications: any high school graduate who is a son or daughter of a bonafide small-scale fisherfolk; not more than 20 years old; not presently enrolled in any course, and general weighted average should not be lower than 80.

The family's annual gross income is not more than P25,000; parents must be a member of a fishing association/cooperative duly attested by the chairman and secretary of the association; and must be a resident of the municipality for at least four years prior to availing the scholarship as attested by the school records and certification from the Barangay Chairman or Municipal Mayor.

Requirements for this program are: photocopy and original transcript of records (Form 137); photocopy and original report card (Form 138); photocopy and original birth certificate; photocopy and original income tax return of parents; and original certification of residency by the Barangay Chairman or Municipal Mayor.

The completely accomplished application forms together with the required documents must be submitted on or before August 30, 2008 at the BFAR Regional Office No. 5, San Agustin, Pili, Camarines Sur. Late applications will not be accepted.

A competitive examination will be conducted on September 20, 2008, 8:00 a.m. at the BFAR Bicol regional office. Only qualified applicants will be allowed to take the examination. Examinees are advised to bring with them black ballpen and pencil.
