City celebrates weeklong 58th Adlaw Hong Butuan

Butuan City (6 August) -- City officials led by City Mayor Democrito "Boy Daku" Plaza II, Cong. Jose "Joboy" Aquino II, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod headed by Vice Mayor Dino Claudio Sanchez, and the City Tourism Office under the supervision of Madam Daisy Plaza, Chairperson, would spearhead the weeklong celebration of the 58th Adlaw Hong Butuan that falls every August 2, and would have its kick-off activity on July 27 (Sunday) during the "Abayan Festival" to be held at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Grounds, this city.
This year's theme is: "Celebrating the Ancient Kingdom of Butuan" embraces the historical significance of Butuan in the country's past and the city's tourism potential.
Mayor Plaza and the city officialdom are pushing Butuan's seven historical sites, which include among others the Suatan Creek at Barangay Ambago; Midden Shell at Barangay Bonbon; Balanghai Boats at Barangay Libertad; Banza Church Ruins at Barangay Banza and Bood Shrine to boost the tourism industry here.
The Balanghai Boats dating back to the 15th Century, which were unearthed several years ago, gave Butuanons more rightful and valid claim in our history that it was Masawa, (now Masao) meaning, glaring, and not Limasawa did Ferdinand Magellan saw and first landed in the Philippines, local historians here insisted.
Even before Magellan came to the Philippines, native Butuanons, royal datus and chieftains in particulars, had already established economic system (barter trade) among themselves and were already trading with Chinese merchants who sold their products such as Chinese porcelain, silk, spices and many others in exchanged for gold which was teeming here before thus the ancient Kingdom of Butuan, the report said.
Mayor Plaza is really bent to develop the city's tourism potentials because of the economic gains and progress the city could derive out of this industry, the good mayor stressed.
With this, the active mayor has given so much emphasis in the cleanliness and beautification surrounding the city, that one of the programs outlined for the Adlaw Hong Butuan occasion, is the Sanitation Officers Training for Barangay Officials to be conducted into two batches that would give teeth to the Anti-Littering Ordinances and the citywide Solid Waste Management campaign.
Another is the launching of "Linis Bago Alis" project on August 1, at the City Hall Kadiwa to be conducted by the City ENRO under Forester Alexander Alaan that would eliminate garbage in our surroundings, it was learned.
Highlight of this occasion, is the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between ART Demo and Sec. Joseph "Ace" Durano of the Department of Tourism, as well as the Turn-Over of funds for the Agusan River Cruise Project at the Sports Complex on August 2 (Adlaw Hong Butuan).
Sec. Durano, it was learned, would distribute P50,000 to P100,000 to community organization, other groups and individuals who are actively involved in the eco-tourism and environmental protection program here.
Prior to these activities, a Mass was held at the St. Joseph Cathedral and a Wreath Laying at the tomb of Cong. Marcos Calo, said to be the Father of the Charter City of Butuan and a Civic Parade and Grand Float Competition in the morning.
Other activities also include: Butuan 1st FlowerHorn Competition, Book Exhibit, Nutrition Information and Natural Family Planning Forum, Jobs Fair and Real Property Consultation, Salad Making Contest and Food Bazaar, Speak Butuanon Quiz Bowl/Trivia Contest, Search for Little Miss Butuan, Magellan's Trek: Lumba Pabibo Butuan, Carambola sa City Sports Complex, Fire Drill, Anti-Smoke Belching Campaign, Kukabildo sa Negosyo, Visayan Singing Contest and Pasikatan sa Butuan Dance Contest, Free Legal Services, Street Party and Fireworks with comedian actress "Pokwang", Kalingawan Patsaon Kabibo Tibuok Mercado, Dog Show, and Employees Night with Bloom Fields.
