Local food producers join Mindanao Island Fair

Koronadal City (6 August) -- Food processors in Northern Mindanao are gearing up for exciting prospects for their products at the upcoming Kahimunan Mindanao Island Fair 2008 slated for August 22-25, 2008 at The Atrium of the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City.

Members of the Food Processors Association of Northern Mindanao (FOPANORMIN) hope to access more market opportunities in the third Mindanao Island Fair hosted this year by the Department of Trade and Industry Region 10 (DTI-10).

Over a hundred participants will be joining this Mindanao-wide fair involving Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and CARAGA in what could be a venue that is expected to generate over P 20 million in sales of products to national and international buyers.

FOPANORMIN president Ruben Uy, proprietor of The Nutcracker Homemade Products, explains that their group sees the benefit of joining trade fairs and exhibits. "I know that most would look at this kind of event as costly," he said. However, he pointed out that trade exhibits on the other hand, bring about exciting prospects as one's market gets wider. "It's an investment!" he exclaimed, having participated in various trade fairs himself.

One of the FOPANORMIN members, the Motherland, participated in the ASEAN Food and Beverage Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan in 2005. As a result, Motherland was able to ship about 10 tons of orders of frozen cassava to Japan.

Ever since its inception in 2001, FOPANORMIN members have shared participation costs in local trade fairs such as the annual South Foodex, Kumbira and Yamang Mindanao in General Santos City of which Kahimunan Mindanao is an offshoot.

Uy explains that being an organized group helps them reduce costs of joining trade fairs. Fairs allow them to gain insights on business techniques as well as enable them to generate sales during and even after the event.

DTI-10 Regional Director Alice V. Euseña encourages micro, small, & medium enterprises (MSMEs) to join trade fairs and exhibits. "It's another form of advertising and marketing where you get direct results that impact on your business."

"Besides," Euseña continues, "most trade fairs give value-added activities that help improve your business." She explains that Kahimunan Mindanao 2008 shall also offer buyer-seller matching and technical sessions on financing and other programs as part of the government's efforts in developing the MSMEs.
