San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur (7 August) -- Interested Grade IV pupils who wish to be government scholars in the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) for the next school year can now avail of application forms from the Department of education (DEP-Ed), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), according to Campus Director Larry Cabatic here.

Dr. Cabatic said all graduating elementary pupils for school year 2008-2009 are eligible to apply for the PSHS Scholarship program provided they belong to the upper 10% of the graduating class as certified by the school principal or have special aptitude in science and math as supported by the report card.

Applicants must be Filipino citizens with no pending application as immigrant in any foreign country; not more than 15 years old by June 30, 2009; of good health and fit to undergo a rigorous academic program; and of good moral character.

An applicant must also not have taken the PSHS national competitive exam previously.

"All Interested applicants must bring a fully accomplished application form in duplicate copies, two identical recent 1x1 ID pictures and a copy of the report card and letter of recommendation if the applicant does not belong to the upper 10% of the current graduating class. A non-refundable test fee of P100 will be charged from students coming from private schools. Those who came from public schools need not pay," he said.

According to Cabatic, only one test will be administered, a scholastic achievement test (SAT) which is designed to measure scientific ability, quantitative ability, abstract reasoning and verbal aptitude which is scheduled on November 15, 2008

"All application forms are available and may be filed at PSHS campuses, DOST regional offices or Provincial Science and Technology Centers on or before September 15,2008," he said.

To orient the applicants about the PSHS and the examination, Cabatic planned to conduct orientation class in the different strategic places in the province.

The PSHS Ilocos Region Campus in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur, which established on February, 2002, through the initiative of former congressman Salacnib Baterina, is one of the eight campuses all over the country under the PSHS System. The main campus is in Diliman, Quezon City, while the others are: Cagayan Valley Campus in Bayombong, Nueva Viscaya; Bicol Region Campus in Goa, Camarines Sur; Eastern Visayas Campus in Palo, Leyte; Central Visayas Campus in Talaytay, Argao, Cebu; Western Visayas Campus in Jaro District, Iloilo City; Central Mindanao Campus in Baloi, Lanao del Norte; and the Southern Mindanao Campus in Tugbok District, Davao City.

The PSHS, an academic institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is the premiere science high school in the country which trains deserving students to become future scientists and technologists. The academic curriculum is designed to prepare these scholars for careers in science and technology. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
