PIA Press Release

PDEA bares increase in persons under drug watch list in Iloilo

Iloilo City (13 August) -- The number of persons in the drug watchlist continues to increase in this city.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 6 (PDEA 6) record showed a significant increase from 64 names in 2007 to 307 this year.

"The list does not include illegal drug users," said a resource person from PDEA 6 during the recent Iloilo City Peace and Order Council (ICPOC) meeting.

The increase of personalities in the drug watchlist can be attributed to the intensive anti-drug operations conducted by the PDEA 6, Police Regional Office 6 (PRO) 6 –RAIDSOG, the different police precincts of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) particularly police precincts 1 and 6 and the support of the ICPOC chaired by Mayor Jerry Trenas.

For the months of June and July, 2008, a total of 11 operations were conducted that resulted to the arrest of 18 personalities with 3 persons in the watchlist.

However, the PDEA record also showed that drug infestation in the city have spread to all the 180 barangays this year, from 55 in 2007. Of the 180 barangays, 18 are considered as seriously affected, 35 are moderately and 127 are slightly affected.

It was noted in the same report that the total number of pending drug cases in court increased from 909 in 2007 to 945 this year. Around 519 cases are pending in Branch 25 and the remaining 426 cases are in Branch 36.

Trenas, who was recently recognized by the PDEA National Office for his support in the anti drug efforts, instructed the new ICPO Director Sr. Supt. Bartolome Tobias to coordinate with PDEA 6 on how to vigorously pursue the campaign against illegal drugs.

Trenas also stressed the need to continue the information drive in schools and barangays to keep alive the war against illegal drugs.

Since 2004, the City Information Office together with the PNP and the PDEA have been conducting anti-drug symposia in city high schools and colleges as well as barangays. For this year, they are set to start the information drive on August 21. (PIA) [top]
