IOM engages McDonald's to paint IOM-USAID permanent shelters

By Mar Arguelles

Legazpi City (13 August) -- The International Organzation for Migration (IOM) had tapped Mc Donalds a multi national food chain to sponsor the painting of hundreds of permanennt core shelter homes in Guinobatan town in Albay, IOM spokesman said today.

Mark Maulit, IOM spokesman, said that his initiative is in response to IOM's objective to increase involvement of the private sector in the on-going rehabilitation efforts in the Bicol region, staff members of McDonalds offered their support as volunteers to assist in painting the completed core permanent shelter units constructed for survivors of the Typhoon Reming (Durian) disaster in late 2006 through the IOM-USAID Bicol Core Permanent Shelter And Community Revitalization Assistance Project.

Maulit said, ten representatives, from the McDonald's branch in Legazpi, went to the Arandurugan-Kenney Village in Mauraro, Guinobatan, Albay last Saturday to render their volunteer service.

The sunny weather was perfect for the day's task and the McDonald's volunteers were able to finish painting the exteriors of several houses. "It was exhausting but very fulfilling", said one volunteer, and using a former McDonald's tagline, she added, "Sa uulitin! (Until the next time!)"

The project being implemented by IOM in Albay and Camarines Sur is a 12 month project currently on its 3rd quarter of execution.

The objective of the initiative is to contribute to the Philippine Government's sustainable recovery program for Typhoon Reming survivors by constructing typhoon-proof and earthquake-resistant houses and multi-purpose community centers for families and communities hardest hit by the super typhoon.

To date, IOM has constructed 410 new homes and plans to finish 497 more by end of September 2008.

IOM coordinates with the national government, local government units, and private groups such as McDonald's to ensure the community's engagement as partners in the over-all rehabilitation effort for the region.
