Feature: "Gulayan sa REAL" answers PGMA's call for food security
Tacloban City (August 14) -- In answer to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's call to prevail over the current food challenge, the Region Eight Administrators League (REAL) recently launched the "Gulayan sa REAL" project which is a food productivity competition that will run from August 1 – November 28, a one crop season.
Manager Flordelis Menzon, the president of REAL, said that the project calls for the planting of vegetables within the premises of the government agencies, state colleges and universities, government owned and controlled corporations and government financial institutions.
The project hopes to help alleviate the financial woes of government employees as well as well as making them as role models in the implementation of the government's thrust of self-reliance and food sufficiency.
PPA Manager Winfred Elizalde, REAL chairman for Special Projects, disclosed that the criteria for judging include productivity or yield per unit; quality; extent of diversification; cropping intensity; and profitability.
The Judges/Technical Working Group of the sponsoring organization will visit the gardens of the participating offices between September 15 and October 15 to inspect and take pictures for documentation.
When harvesting, the participating offices must call on the judges to witness and document the harvest.
The winners will receive cash prizes approved by the REAL Board of Directors, P20,000 for the first prize; P15,000 for the second prize; and P10,000 for the third prize.
