AFP, PNP clear MILF-occupied barangays

Midsayap, North Cotabato (14 August) -- The joint forces of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police have completed clearing operations in the areas occupied by renegade elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the towns of Midsayap, Pikit, Libungan and Aleosan in this province.

"Wala ng presence ng mga armed groups sa mga barangays. Wala ng threats. Nagpapatuloy ngayon ang 'demining' operations para masigurado ang safety ng mga lugar bago makabalik ang mga residente," Major Medel Aguilar of the 5th CRG, CRS, AFP said.

Aguilar further said one soldier was injured from a land mine explosion in Barangay Dubak, Pikit, boundary of Aleosan, North Cotabato.

In a related development, P/Chief Supt. Felizardo Serapio, Jr. PNP 12 Director revealed that elements of the Pikit Municipal Police Station discovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) five (5) days ago at Barangay Delangaoen, Pikit, North Cotabato. The IED was successfully detonated, according to Serapio, by the elements of the 66th EOD, Philippine Army based at Midsayap, North Cotabato. Serapio disclosed that there was a possible attempt to sabotage the NAPOCOR Transmission Tower No. 48 situated at the said area.

On the stay of the troops in the affected barangays, Major Aguilar said government forces will stay for as long as they are needed in the said areas. (OTS/PIA 12) [top]
