Legazpi City (15 August) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Bicol has received a letter of congratulations from the Civil Service Commission (CSC), for the feat of Ms. Evelyn R. Reonal, Cashier I of Albay First District Engineering Office (DEO), as one of the recipients of the Dangal ng Bayan Award for this year's Search for Outstanding Public Officials and Employees.
"It has never occurred to me that simple act of not touching a penny that is not mine for the taking would earn me and the office I serve, such an enormous honor," said Ms. Reonal.
The incident happened last year, June 22 at Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) branch here, where Reonal encashes checks for the salaries of Albay DEO personnel.
Upon receiving cash from the teller, she usually checks the amount at the money counter machine located in a secluded section of the bank.
On that particular day, Reonal was within a few steps from the machine when she saw a bundle of a hundred-peso bill stuck up in the money counter. Without any second thought, she immediately informed the Bank's Assistant Manager about the matter. The money amounted to P100,000.
"Ms. Reonal has served this office as Cashier for six years now. Our trust in her is impeccable," said Albay District Engineer Manuel Zurin.
The DPWH in Bicol is also the recipient of a Certificate of Recognition from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for its invaluable support in tax collection efforts of the government and significantly contributing to the attainment of collection goal of Revenue Region No. 10 (Bicol) for taxable year 2007.
"We are so gratified to receive these prestigious awards," DPWH Bicol regional director Orlando Roces said. "These awards will surely boost the morale of the entire DPWH family," he stressed. (DPWH/PIA) [top]
