DENR XII conducts in-house review to boost research and development
Koronadal City (15 August) -- In an attempt to monitor and evaluate the on-going and completed project studies of the researchers as well as field implementers of the Ecosystems Research and Development Service of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XII, an in – house review was conducted on August 12, 2008 in Koronadal City.
The said review is a biennial activity in compliance with Section 9 of DENR Administrative Order 96-27. In attendance were more or less 30 participants comprising the pool of research specialists, panel of evaluators and secretariat.
Representatives from the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) and Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), both stationed at Los Baños, Laguna, composed the panel of evaluators.
Dr. Lope A. Calanog, ERDB, Asst. Director Review Committee Chair, said the objectives of the review were to check whether the studies and projects presented are within the plans and programs of the DENR and the scientific methodologies have been employed; to determine whether the objectives of the study have been met and to identify significant research results for policy formulation and development planning.
Engr. Santiago R. Baconguis, one of the evaluators, suggested that the data related to the vulnerability issue should be consistent. He enjoined the researchers to be wary in the gathering of their data and relevant information. It pays to observe but then countercheck the raw data with the actual ground data, Santiago emphasized.
The rest of the evaluators were ERDB Planning Chief Editha P. Eusebio, and PCARRD representative Leila C. America. The evaluators acknowledged the dedication of the researchers and project field implementers in conducting their respective studies despite some financial and time constraints.
"We have to remedy the issues and problems confronted by the implementers of concerned studies. Through helpful comments and suggestions from the panel of evaluators, the researchers of DENR XII will improve their research performance in the future," DENR Region XII Executive Director Jim O. Sampulna declared.
There were seven project studies presented during the review with the following titles: Vulnerability Assessment of Allah Valley Watershed Forest Reserve (AVWFR) Parcel l; Determination of Carrying Capacity of Grazing Land (FLGLA 103); Determination of Carrying Capacity of a CBFM Area (Kapanal T'boli Multipurpose Cooperative); Vulnerability Assessment of AVWFR Parcel II; Determination of Carrying Capacity of a Protected Area (Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape); Vulnerability Assessment of Kabulnan Watershed Forest Reserve; and Demonstration and Application of Production and Utilization Technologies for Rattan Sustainable Development in the ASEAN Member Countries.
The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) is the principal research and development (R & D) unit of the DENR. Its R & D and extension activities are focused on the five major ecosystems of the Philippines which include forests, upland farms, grassland and degraded areas, coastal zone and freshwater, and urban areas.
