Pampanga observes National Disaster Consciousness Month

San Fernando City, Pampanga (21 August) -- A mass and motorcade were held simultaneously in various provinces and cities in the region as a kick off ceremony for the month-long annual observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month from July 1-31 this year.

This was disclosed by Police Chief Supt..Errol T. Pan, regional director of the Philippine National Police III (PRO-3) and concurrent chairman of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC).

Dubbed as "Pag Alerto Malayo Sa Peligro", the objective of the month long celebration is to promote awareness on the importance of preparedness in case of disaster.

Pan also said that RDCC member agencies in coordination with local government units, non-government organizations, deputized coordinators, private and business sectors in various provinces in the region had showcased various activities in observance of the said celebration.

Neri G. Amparo, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) III and executive officer of the RDCC III said that the activities for the said celebration include the hanging of streamers at strategic places throughout the region, simultaneous motorcade which was participated in by the local government units, civic organizations; an earthquake drill and tsunami simulation exercise in the region.

Urban Search and Rescue Drill (USAR) was launched by the Office of the Civil Defense in Region III and National Capital Region and held at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. It was an earthquake preparedness and static display and response exercise participated in by the USAR groups from Metro Manila, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Fire Rescue Team, Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

The OCD-RDCC III in coordination with SM Clark had also launched the four-day Static Display on Disaster and Response Capability at the Event Center, SM Clark in Angeles City.

A Regional First-Aid and Basic Life Support Olympics was conducted by the Philippine National Red Cross(PNRC) Pampanga and Angeles City Chapters in coordination with RDCC III and it was held in Subic Bay. There was also an awarding of the winners of the Regional Gawad Kalasag for local disaster coordinating councils (DCCs) in the region on the fourth week of July; live interviews on radio and television of representatives of RDCC member-agencies with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and local broadcast stations from July to September.

Likewise, information materials on disaster preparedness were distributed to various government agencies, schools and local government units in the region..

The facilitators for the month long celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month are OCD-III staff, deputized OCD coordinators from the seven provinces, RDCC action officers from the Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Information Agency, Department of Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine National Red Cross, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Education, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Commission on Indigenous People, National Economic and Development Authority, National Food Authority, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Public Works and Highways, Bureau of Telephone, National Irrigation Administration, Department of Agriculture, National Irrigation Administration, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Health, Department of Budget and Management and Land Transportation Office.
