Dumaguete City (21 August) -- Sibulan is now poised to implement its barangay-based solid waste management program in January 2009.
In addressing the barangay captains of Sibulan, Mayor Antonio Renacia underscored the important role and responsibility the barangays play under the said program.
Under Republic Act 2003, the barangay is mandated to handle the implementation of the solid waste management in the local government units.
According to Sibulan Information Officer Rosario Rosales, the municipal government plans to turn over the collection of garbage fees to the respective barangays.
Once this happens, Sibulan would be the first in the country to entrust its waste collection fee to the barangays, said Rosales.
Sibulan's Brgy. Poblacion is being eyed as the pilot area for the project's implementation next year.
However, other barangay captains have signified their readiness to implement the program.
The barangay captains recently attended a forum which aimed to formulate a scheme, system or strategies for the program's effective implementation.
Currently, the municipal government is working out the forging of a memorandum of agreement with the barangays which Rosales said still has to be set. (PIA/RMN) [top]
