Tacloban City (August 25) -- This year's National Crime Prevention Week celebration on September 1-7 is focused at calling on the youth to walk and work together towards crime prevention and the attainment of lasting peace.

In a memorandum dated July 17, 2008, DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno who is also the chairman of the National Police Commission, enjoined all Napolcom Regional Directors, DILG Regional and Provincial Directors, city and municipal local government operations officers, all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors and chairmen of the regional, provincial, city and municipal peace and order councils to actively support the projects and activities of the National Crime Prevention Week celebration.

The celebration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 461 dated August 31, 1994 declaring the first week of September of every year as the National Crime Prevention Week, during which all government agencies and instrumentalities of government are enjoined to evolve and implement projects and activities that focus on prevention as an approach in combating criminality.

The week-long celebration aims to promote community involvement and participation in crime prevention. It also hopes to build public commitment and participation in activities that effectively deter commission of crimes.

Secretary Puno said that this year, the 14th year of the National Crime Prevention Week celebration shall focus on the involvement of the youth sector in crime prevention, thus the theme "Kapit-Bisig Kabataan Tungo sa Kapayapaan, Now Na!" and the slogan, "Lakad Kabataan Laban sa Kriminalidad."

The programs and activities for this year's celebration of the National Crime Prevention Week are aimed at establishing and strengthening the Student Crime Prevention Network, Secretary Puno added.

The Kickoff Ceremony will be on September 1 with a nationwide "whistle blowing," which shall be done simultaneously at exactly 10:00 o'clock up to 10:05 in the morning. This activity is a youth initiative to signal the fight against crime, Secretary Puno further said.

Among the activities for this year's National Crime Prevention Week are the hanging of streamers spearheaded by Napolcom; press releases, radio and TV interview and Information Campaign spearheaded by PIA with the support of Napolcom and PNP; Convention of Student Crime Prevention Network ; and the Ugnayan ng Mamamayan at Pulis sa Metro Manila.

On September 1, the Kickoff and Stand-Up Campaign Against Crime will be spearheaded by the National Youth Commission. This will be followed by the organization or monitoring of Student Crime Prevention Campaign in various school in Metro Manila and the National Congress on Crime and Drug Abuse Prevention where the Best Student Crime Prevention Awards will be given out.
