Davao del Norte (29 August) -- The Provincial Government launched the stream bank protection and rehabilitation project of Madgao-Saug river recently planting 12,000 forest tree seedlings alongside.

Madgao-Saug River is one of the major streams of Davao del Norte that provides irrigation from Brgy. Monte Dujali, San Isidro downstream to Pagsabangan, Tagum City. It is also said to be a potential source of hydroelectric power and potable water for the province.

As what Governor Rodolfo del Rosario put it as based on the study conducted by the province, "water from the said river is ideal for drinking."

"We have to start protecting the river today from further damage for future needs," the Governor said to provincial, municipal and barangay officials, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and residents of Brgy. Buclad, Asuncion who were in attendance during the launching program. "We have to plant along the river bank to protect the area from soil erosion," he added.

According to the head of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), Felix Abangin, 664,000 seedlings must be planted in order to complete the project in 2 years time.

However, Governor del Rosario who also planted a tree during the launching program said "we will not just plant trees, we will check on them from time to time to monitor their growth." (PGO-ID/PIA XI) [top]
