Senator Cayetano takes health, women empowerment advocacy to Tacloban
Tacloban City (August 29) -- Senator Pia S. Cayetano will bring her advocacies on health and women empowerment when she visits Tacloban City this weekend, August 30-31.
A visit to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) will highlight the senator's schedule on Saturday, Mr. Mike Ac-ac, the Senator's media officer informed.
Cayetano, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, will tour the hospital's pediatrics and maternity wards to check the condition of patients and consult with hospital officials on the state of medical services in the facility.
The lady senator has been fighting for higher fund allocations for the health sector to uplift the public health system in Congress' annual deliberation of the national government budget.
Cayetano will also promote breastfeeding, which she considers as the most cost-effective means of battling infant malnutrition and the high under-5 child mortality rate in the country.
On Sunday morning, Cayetano will compete in the 21-kilometer category of the Tacloban leg of the 32nd Milo Marathon.
A lawyer, mother of two, and triathlete, Cayetano began to seriously take up running and biking after the passing of her third child Gabriel, who died of a rare congenital ailment in 2001. She now uses sports events to raise funds to help children with disabilities and other causes like women's fitness and empowerment.
Last Thursday, Cayetano's office, in cooperation with the office of 1st Councilor Cristina Gonzales and the office of Mayor Alfred Romualdez, staged a breastfeeding seminar at the Canhuraw Convention Center.
The seminar was attended by around 600 participants composed of barangay health workers.
A "Pinay in Action" running clinic for female students will also be held Friday at the Eastern Visayas State University, in coordination with University President Dr. Catalino Beltran. (PIA 8) [top]
